Starting a law firm is certainly a daunting task and a huge endeavor. Learn from these established law firm owners why and how they started their own law firm, and how their experience translates into starting and operating your own law firm in 2022. This presentation will touch upon considerations such as (1) operation as a sole practitioner or corporate formation as an LLP or professional corporation, (2) hiring employees and independent contractors of the firm to scale and grow; and (3) drafting agreements.

  • Forming your law firm; incorporating as a Professional Corporation (S Corporation) v. LLP and registering your law firm with the State Bar of CA
  • Worker classification: Employee v. Independent Contractor, and how to hire and scale your law firm
  • The ethical rules that govern fee sharing or referral fees (Rule 1.5.1 Fee Divisions Among Lawyers) for fee agreements
  • Drafting a Partnership Agreement, and departures of law firm partners
