We invite you to join us for a timely discussion on policing reform and public safety with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP (“Gibson Dunn”) attorneys Marcellus McRae, Ben Wagner, and Frances Waldmann.
The historic nationwide protests in response to systemic abusive police practices and racism have prompted painful reflection and renewed the long-standing question around the proper role of law enforcement in the United States. This is an opportune moment to reimagine policing as a model that, instead of perpetuating racial inequality, reconciles and heals communities.
On June 1, 2020, former President Barack Obama published a blog post titled “How to Make this Moment the Turning Point for Real Change,” sharing the link to a milestone community-based policing report and accompanying toolkit published last year by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. Over 160 Gibson Dunn associates spent more than two years working extensively on the report, “New Era of Public Safety: A Guide to Fair, Safe, and Effective Community Policing,” engaging in a deep dive into evidence-based best practices to reform policing in collaboration with community advocates, academics and law enforcement experts.
During the presentation, we will discuss the report’s key recommendations against the backdrop of the evolving reform landscape and tell the story of how Gibson Dunn became involved in this unique project. Finally, we invite you to consider and discuss ideas for actions that can be taken by companies and other organizations invested in the fight for racial equality in order to deliver a reform agenda towards fair, safe and effective community-based policing.
