Art & Crime: Exploring the Impact of New Anti-Money Laundering Laws on the Art Market and Understanding the Work of the FBI’s Art Crime Squad
||Thursday, September 29, 2022
||5:30 - 6:00 p.m.
||6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
||7:00 - 8:15 p.m.
Join BASF for our upcoming Art Law Symposium where Georges Lederman and Chris Kaltsas will discuss the US Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network’s Study of the Facilitation of Money Laundering and Terror Finance Through the Trade in Works of Art that was released on February 4, 2022 and its current impact on the art market. They will also discuss anti-money laundering laws and sanctions on Russia as they pertain to works of art and antiques.
In the absence of clear guidance in the form of anti-money laundering regulations applicable to the art market, what should art market participants do to avoid inadvertently dealing with international bad actors, thereby violating the various US/UK sanctions regimes? They will also talk about the work of the FBI’s Art Crime squad, including recent highprofile seizures of allegedly fake Jean-Michel Basquiat paintings.
